This stuff is a great shortcut for a light, rich brown sauce. Not a heavy thick gravy, but a rich glaze. It's beefy, but there are definite vegetable flavors that shine through. A spoonful of it adds a wonderful roundness to any beef recipes that have a sauce or gravy, or a spoonful can make an instant pan sauce with some drippings. I like to use it as a base for a marsala sauce, or a carmelized onion sauce for sauteed pork chops, since it's not as heavy as a gravy. We purchased this product through Amazon and received it promptly on May 16, 2012. When it arrived, we looked everywhere on the canisters to find the expiration date. None was visible, so we thought perhaps the date was contained within the coding numbers on the bottom of the canisters, but the information was indecipherable to us. We called Knorr Swiss directly for assistance. We were told that KNORR SWISS DISCOUNTINUED THIS PRODUCT IN 2004, and since the maximum expiration date on these sauces is 2 years past the manufacture date, they were seriously expired, and we were told that under no circumstances should this product be used for food preparation. We logged onto our Amazon account to return the product, but were told the product was not eligible for return. We then contacted Amazon by phone and, as usual, they were extremely gracious and co-operative. They confirmed that grocery items are not eligible for return, but immediately processed a full refund for the amount of the purchase to our credit card account. Amazon assured me they would deal with the vendor on this issue, and I trust that they will. In the meantime, be aware that this is not a safe food product. The only reason I gave this even 1 star, is that the product review format will not allow for 0 stars.
Mia's Kitchen Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce 25.5 Oz. Jar
I've been making my own sauce for over twenty years but sometimes I need to make things happen quickly in the kitchen. I found this sauce at a local TJMaxx and after reading the ingredients and seeing how "homemade" it looked in the jar I decided to give this brand a try.I have to say as far as jarred sauce goes, Mia's did not disappoint. Perfect thickness not too thin/runny and not too thick and paste like. Excellent balance of fresh tomato flavor, acidity and sweetness.
I thought the basil note could be a little stronger so I added a little chopped fresh to the plate.
This sauce is very good on its own or could be a quick start to a bolognese if you add meat; would be a terrific addition to a lasagne, baked ziti or pretty much any pasta dish that begins or ends with a red sauce.

From the name, you might think that this is Mirin, or sweet cooking rice wine. It's not. Here's the ingredient list: "Glucose syrup, Water, Alcohol, Rice, Corn syrup, salt". What you're buying here is glorified sugar-water. It's a scam that this product has mirin in the name, but is a cheap substitue "sweet cooking rice seasoning" instead.From reference, from About.com, here's what mirin is supposed to be: "Mirin is a Japanese condiment which contains about 14% alcohol. This makes my brown rice taste good, which means I eat more of it. This is great stuff; just add this and a dash of soy sauce to short grain brown rice :)

So, I bought this after running out of margarita mix. WHILE drinking margaritas. It's worth mentioning that I had had a couple of margaritas by the time I bought this, which would explain why I didn't remember it the next day, and was quite surprised when a box of SIX bottles of margarita mix showed up at my door. On a side note, I think Amazon should have a breathalyzer before being able to buy anything, but anyway.I've been using this brand of margarita mix for years. I normally buy it at Walmart, but it's much cheaper buying it on Amazon (plus I'm stocked for the next couple of years!!). The box was quite heavy (as you can imagine), but it held up well during shipping. The bottles came with the tags you stick on the top for stocking on store shelves, which I got a kick out of for some reason.
The mix makes GREAT margaritas. I've had many complements on my drinks, and all I've used was this mix and some tequila (if I want a sweeter drink, I just dump some Triple Sec in there too). It's super easy to make a good margarita with this mix. I highly recommend it, especially if you don't normally have a bunch of fruit and drink ingredients hanging around.

Decided to try one of these since they were on sale at the natural food store and I'm very disappointed. I am a huge fan of Amy's organic lentil soup and this stuff does not compare. This stuff has more salt, less fat and much less flavor (other than the flavor of salt).
